Figure 5: Case Conclusion - The horse is shown here 6 months after the second intervention, after having been returned to light riding. He continued on a problem-free rehabilitation, and hunted for another 6 years, before succumbing to a bout of colic.
The case is important, because it illustrates the importance of obtaining a solid fixation of the vertical component of this common form of olecranon fracture, especially in larger horses. Due to the concavity of the medial aspect of the olecranon process, it can difficult to engage the bone just proximal to the coronoid process unless the drill bit is angled slightly caudomedially to craniolaterally.
